Clear Braces

Playing Sports While Wearing Clear Braces

To revive your smile, clear braces are a good choice for people of all ages. Teens and adults alike can enjoy the benefits of aligners and get straighter teeth and correct jaw alignments. Caring for your aligners is critical to the success of your treatment. This includes regular cleaning and proper handling of the appliance. You should also be mindful of the aligners if you are involved in high-impact activities.

How clear braces and aligners work

Traditional metal braces are no longer the only option for straightening teeth. Patients can choose other methods for repairing dental abnormalities. Clear ceramic braces are much less noticeable but perform the same function. Also, clear aligners are a good choice for people who want an invisible solution.

Aligners are mouthguard-like appliances that fit over the teeth. They put pressure on the teeth and bones to move the teeth into the correct positions in the mouth. This happens gradually but steadily. The process usually takes a year but can be shorter or longer depending on the person’s needs.

Keeping the aligners clean

One challenge that patients experience with clear braces and aligners is that food can get trapped underneath them. Bacteria can then build up in between teeth and on the gumline. This leads to cavities and gum disease. Aligners are removable, so patients should take them out when eating. Frequent rinsing with warm water will also help keep them free of debris. It is also important to brush the appliances twice a day with a fluoride-base toothpaste.

Playing sports: to remove or keep in the aligners

Clear aligners and braces can be prone to damage if they suffer a heavy blow. Getting the appliance knocked out can damage it. People who participate in athletics should be aware of these risks and determine when it is appropriate to play without the aligner. In mild- or moderate-impact sports such as soccer, tennis, track and field, and basketball, it should be fine to leave in the appliance. However, people who play football or hockey, or who participate in wrestling or boxing should take out the aligners before playing.

What to do instead

Removing the aligners is not enough alone for athletes. For wearers of clear braces and aligners, a mouthguard or gum shield is a vital piece of equipment. This appliance will protect the teeth during competition. This is important as it will help to prevent injuries to the teeth during treatment. The dentist can recommend different effective products for people to use while playing sports.

Keep your smile healthy

The last thing you want to do during your teeth-straightening treatment is to break your aligners or clear braces. You can avoid this problem by wearing the proper equipment while you play, including a mouthguard. Certain activities may also require removing the aligners altogether. If you take out your aligners, make sure you replace them right after the game or practice is over. If you have any questions or concerns about your treatment and what to do about your braces or appliance, contact your dentist.
